Your Baby At 12 Months!

Milestones matter! How your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves offers important clues about his or her development. Check the milestones your child has reached by 12 months. Take this with you and talk with your child’s doctor at every well-child visit about the milestones your child has reached and what to expect next.

What Most Babies Do by this Age:

Social/Emotional

  • Smiles at people and may show affection, such as hugging or kissing caregivers.
  • May become more independent but still seeks comfort from familiar adults.
  • Shows anxiety or fear around strangers.

Language/ Communication

  • Babbles with more varied sounds and may say simple words like "mama" or "dada."
  • Responds to simple commands, like "come here" or "give me."
  • Turns head toward sounds and understands some basic words.

Cognitive

  • Pays attention to faces and can recognize people at a distance.
  • Begins to understand cause and effect (e.g., dropping something and watching it fall).
  • May become bored or fussy if activities don't change or engage them.
  • Imitates actions, like clapping or waving.

Movement/Physical Development

  • Stands with or without support, and may start walking with help or independently.
  • Begins to cruise along furniture while holding on.
  • Uses a pincer grasp more effectively to pick up small objects.
  • May start to feed themselves with their hands or attempt using a spoon.

My 12-Month-Old Baby's Milestones
