Your Baby At 3 Years!

Milestones matter! How your child plays, learns, speaks, acts, and moves offers important clues about his or her development. Check the milestones your child has reached by 3 years. Take this with you and talk with your child’s doctor at every well-child visit about the milestones your child has reached and what to expect next.

What Most Babies Do by this Age:

Social/Emotional

  • Shows affection toward familiar people and may have strong attachments to specific objects or toys.
  • May feel more confident but could still experience fear or anxiety in unfamiliar situations or around new people.
  • Expresses frustration more clearly and may show a range of emotions when things don't go as expected.
  • Demonstrates more independence in daily tasks but still seeks comfort from caregivers in new or challenging situations.

Language/ Communication

  • Says a growing number of words and begins forming simple sentences (e.g., "I want cookie," "Where's mom?").
  • Understands and follows more complex instructions
  • Uses gestures along with speech to express emotions and needs (e.g., nodding, pointing).
  • Communicates a variety of needs, emotions, and ideas using words, gestures, and body language.

Cognitive

  • Has a better understanding of cause and effect
  • Engages in more complex pretend play
  • Begins solving simple problems and shows curiosity about how things work.
  • Understands object permanence even more and may enjoy games like hide-and-seek or finding hidden objects.

Movement/Physical Development

  • Walks and runs confidently, may begin jumping, climbing, or balancing on one foot.
  • Uses the pincer grasp well and can manipulate small objects, like buttons or small toys.
  • May start drawing more recognizable shapes or figures and experiments with scribbling and coloring.
  • Feeds themselves independently with utensils, though still may need help cutting food or with tricky tasks.

My 3-Years-Old Baby's Milestones

  • It's important to remember that every baby develops at their own pace, so if any milestones aren't quite there yet, it's okay -each baby is unique!
